Grow, Store and Preserve Garden Produce

Course Image

Growing and using your own vegetables and fruit can be a rewarding experience on so many levels. In this enjoyable day on the Beynon's farm you will learn how they've developed their own extensive vegetable, fruit and nut garden over the past decade.

They’ll share the techniques they use to improve the soil, protect crops, create micro-climates and store and preserve the harvest. They will also suggest how you can apply these techniques to your own plot of land large or small.

Outline for the day:
Morning tea will be available on arrival followed by a tour of the vegetable garden and orchard. Depending on the interests of participants, topics for discussion through the day may include: design, infrastructure (trellising, hothouse, bird-proofing); microclimates; building fantastic soil; rotation; which veg & fruit to grow; pest and disease control; overall philosophy (self-sufficiency, organic, pragmatic), and seasonal veggie production.
There will also be a presentation about storing and preserving the harvest for year-round food supply, including jams, jellies and chutney. Topics covered here may also include equipment, root store, drying, freezing, bottling and other options.
